Access and the finished area shape the plan
The grinder needs a workable route to the stump, so gate width, steps, slopes, walls, and landscaping may affect equipment choice. Movable items should be cleared from the approach and immediate work area. Grinding creates a mixture of wood chips and soil. Some scopes leave this material in the hole, while others include removal or redistribution. Full root removal is different from grinding and involves substantially more excavation.

Before the grinder arrives
- Utility marking: public underground utilities are marked through Miss Utility before grinding.
- Private lines: mark sprinkler heads, irrigation lines, invisible dog fences and low-voltage lighting, which Miss Utility does not locate.
- Access: measure the narrowest gate or path; compact grinders fit through many standard backyard gates.
- Clear the area: move cars, furniture, planters and toys away from the stump.
On grinding day
The grinder's cutting wheel moves side to side across the stump, chipping it down below grade. Surface roots that are part of the scope are ground along the same path. Chips fly, so keep people and pets well back. Most single residential stumps take well under an hour; larger stumps and multiple stumps take longer.
After grinding
You will be left with a mound of grindings mixed with soil. They can fill the hole, be spread as mulch, or be hauled away. Grindings settle as the wood breaks down, so top off the spot with soil before seeding.
